STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

STEP I. PREPARE THE METAL STAMPING SET ( duration 5 min)

  1. Take a paper napkin and clean each metal stamp (there can be excess oil from the machining process).
  2. Take the CATANA card. Press each stamping bar in the Test Area (at the bottom of the CARD) to see the correct orientation. Now just stick the appropriate number, on the right side of  each metal stamp, from the small stickers sheet to be easier to use when stamping the metal.
  3. For digits 6 and 9 you will use the same metal stamp. Stick 6 and 9 on the correct side for easy use

STEP II. CONVERT YOUR SEED PHRASE INTO NUMBERS ( duration 10 min)

  1. Take a pen and write your words on the Catana card (in the column word) in the order generated by the wallet you want to save. Order is essential for the integrity of your wallet.
  2. Go to our Download Centre to get your BIP 39 Wordlist in English  or visit https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/tree/master/bip-0039 and click on english.txt for the same list of 2048 words.
  3. Search each word from your seed phrase in the list and write the corresponding number next to the word (in the boxes). After converting all words into numbers, if you want to simply save your phrase without encrypting, with our patented method, go directly to STEP IV.

STEP III. APPLY CATANA ENCRYPTION METHOD ( duration 10 min)

The main principle of this patented encryption method is to switch 2 (or 4 in pairs of two) digits between them respecting the rules below and you this will generate a different sequence of numbers that will lead a robber to a wrong seed phrase. Only you will have access to the encryption key and to your wallet.  ​

RULES FOR CORRECT ENCRYPTION

  1. Do not choose 0, 1, or 2 because we don’t want to change the first digit for large numbers (ex. if you switch 2 with 4 and have the last word in your seed phrase, number 2048  will become 4028 which is nonsense).
  2. If on your card you will see numbers bigger than 2000 then you must pay attention to the chosen digits. You don’t want that the number encrypted to be larger than 2048. (ex. If you have 2048 on your card and you decide to switch 9 and 8, you will get 2049)
  3. Choose 2 digits to be switched one with the other and write them in the top 2 boxes in the right upper corner on the card (for our example we choose 4 and 9).
  4. You can add an extra layer of encryption and choose other 2 digits to be switched and write them in the two boxes below on the Catana Card. 
  5. Now take the large stickers sheet. We will use the large digits from 3 to 9. You can see that the size of each sticker is the same with the squares on the Catana Card.
  6. Carefully scan the numbers written in squares next to the words for the chosen digits from the pair. For our example each time we see 4 we will stick a 9 on it. Each time we see a 9 we will stick a 4 on it.
  7. Repeat the process for the second pair if chosen.
  8. Congratulations your seed phrase is encrypted

MANDATORY – REVERSE THE ENCYPTION PROCESS ! ( duration 10 min)

Take a piece of paper and revert the process. Having the encryption key in the right corner of Catana Card. Restore the correct numbers and near them write the corresponding word from the Github list. Compare the resulted seed phrase with your original one. If it’s ok you can go to the next step to punch it for eternity.

STEP IV. PUNCHING THE NUMBERED PHRASE TO THE STEEL PLATE ( duration 25 min)

  1. Take the physical Bitcoin in your pack and look at the back of the coin. You will note 4 squares similar to the ones on the CATANA Card. Now you have 2 options:
    a/ store your encryption key on those 4 squares by stamping those 4 numbers
    b/ memorize the pairs (this is riskier and can result in losing your seed phrase)
  2. Now, take one plate and start transferring the encrypted numbers to the plates.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR STAMPING THE PLATES

  1. The stamping process can take up to 30 minutes. Do not hurry and have a break after each 4 – 5 words stamped. Don’t forget that the scope of this step is not creating a masterpiece in stamping, the scope is stamping 4ever ONLY 4U :). So don’t search perfection in stamped digits. Be convinced that you can read it. Believe us, it’s enough. Sometimes is like handwriting. Stamping on steel is not easy but we guarantee that it will last for ever. We believe this matters most.
  2. It is better to use a heavy hammer because the steel is hard. 
  3. Try to hit only once per each digit, a firm hit, in the center of the punching bar.
  4. Stay focused not to skip a word or to punch the wrong number. Pay attention especially to 6 and 9. If not sure better use the test area on the Catana Card before each punch.
  5. Even if it may seem a little consuming you, remember that you will do it only once for your wallet!

CONGRATULATIONS. YOUR SEED PHRASE IS SAFE, and only you hold the key to it.
